Daughter of Blue Jays coach Mark Budzinski dies aged 17

The 17-year-old daughter of Toronto Blue Jays first base coach Mark “Bud” Budzinski died on Saturday, reportedly after a boating accident in Virginia.

“This devastating loss is felt throughout our organization and we grieve with Bud and his family,” said Ross Atkins, executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager of Blue Jays. “I have known Bud for over 25 years and have always admired his dedication as a father and husband first. He is loved and respected throughout our clubhouse and holds a special place in our hearts.”

Budzinski will not be with the team to be with his family, which includes two surviving children, the statement said.

According to a representative for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources, a 17-year-old girl died Saturday after she and another girl fell from a tube pulled by a boat and was struck by the boat’s propeller after the boat swayed. , pushing it on top of her.

“The operator immediately jumped into the river to save the victim, as did another passing boat operator,” the statement said.

No malicious intent is suspected and alcohol was not involved in the incident, the department said, noting that “life jackets were worn”.

Students from Glen Allen High School, where Budzinski was a senior, gathered Sunday night for a vigil in her memory, where Mark and Monica Budzinski also appeared, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch

“She just had the best year. She had a great year,” Monica said of her daughter at the wake, according to the paper.

About her daughter’s day on Saturday, she added that “it was a very happy, fun last day on earth for her, unfortunately, of course. But it was happy, laughing, having fun.”

“That’s how I’ll remember her, and that’s the way everyone should do it. She loved life. She loved being outdoors, sports, everything. She will live on through all of you.”

Budzinski played varsity football and volleyball in her high school and was involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. She was also vice president of the school’s National Honor Society chapter and an avid volunteer with organizations that help people with disabilities, the paper reported.
