Carlos Sainz spread out Max Verstappen to claim the first pole position of his Formula 1 career for today British Grand Prix†
In the rain at Silverstone on Saturday, Ferrari’s Sainz excelled by beating world champion Verstappen by just 0.072 seconds with Charles Leclerc third in the other scarlet car.
Sergio Perez qualified fourth, with Lewis Hamilton a full second back in fifth place – one spot ahead of compatriot Lando Norris who finished sixth for McLaren. Hamilton’s teammate at Mercedes George Russell finished eighth.
“Thank you everyone for staying there in this rain,” Sainz said. “Spaniards struggle with the rain, but you are used to it. I put together a lap, I didn’t think it was anything special, but it was pole position and that came as a bit of a surprise. The pace has been there all weekend, but based on my practice pace, we should be in a good position to hold onto the first.

You know what, the watershed fence to protect the fans behind the tire barriers probably saves lives here, not to mention the halo on Zhou’s car.
The way the inverted Alpha is thrown into the fence is an absolute horror. Really great to hear Zhou and everyone in the area sounds like all OK.

It has been confirmed that the race will restart with the same starting order that the race started with, minus the drivers who are out – Russell, Albon, Zhou.

As we haven’t completed a full lap yet, Sainz is back on pole – Hamilton back to fifth.
So the top 10: Sainz, Verstappen, Leclerc, Perez, Hamilton, Norris, Alonso, Latifi, Gasly, Bottas.
That said, there is a lot of confusion here. Maybe it’s because they didn’t get through the first sector…

It’s one hell of a crash
I just watched a replay in the media center of the crash.
Russell squeezes Gasly, causing a light touch – Russell clamps down on Zhou and tosses the Alfa Romeo upside down towards the guardrail before the Chinese driver’s car spins backwards and up, into the fence above the tire barrier.
Meanwhile, a secondary incident behind them caused numerous collisions. Bumper cars honestly.

George Russell has a conversation with an FIA official. It’s a bit unclear, but I believe he’s asking why he can’t rejoin the race. The Mercedes driver sat in the gravel before getting out and running towards Zhou’s car.

Zhou update: Alfa Romeo driver is on stretcher from car
Zhou is out of the car. He is on a stretcher but is on the move, and his Alfa Romeo team says he is doing well. Good news.
He has been taken to hospital.
