DLNR News Release: HAWAI’I WILDLIFE CONSERVATION STAMP CONTEST OPENED

(Honolulu) – Artists are welcome to submit entries to the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) in the annual art competition featuring two local animal species for the Hawaii Wildlife Conservation and Game Bird Stamp from 2022-23.
The conservation stamp is a requirement for Hawaii state hunting licenses. The hunting bird stamp is required for anyone who plans to hunt game birds. Both stamps will be available to stamp collectors.
Subject for this year’s stamps
Game Bird Stamp- Chukar pcartridge †Alectoris Chukar) (occurring on all major Hawaiian islands) was introduced to Hawaii in 1923. It is native to Asia and Eastern Europe, from Israel to Nepal. They are about 14 inches long and have a gray-brown back with sides streaked in black and white feathers. Their face is white with a black band across the eyes to the neck. They are a dominant part of the avifauna in upland scrub and may have filled a niche that are now extinct or rare birds. The alien bird’s role in facilitating seed dispersal and germination of native plant species has been shown to be beneficial in restoring degraded ecosystems.
Wildlife Conservation Stamp-ʻliwi †vestiaria coccinea) are federally listed as endangered statewide. Adults have vibrant red plumage with black wings and tail and a curved salmon-colored bill. The juvenile is buffy with black spots, shorter dusky bill turns yellow in color than salmon with age. Feeds mainly on ʻōhiʻa nectar, but also visits tubular flowers of understory plants such as ʻakala and lobelias and takes insects.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
INSTITUTION: Hawaii habitat
MATE: Completed painting maximum 24″ by 36″ and unframed (reducible to 1″ X 1.5″ stamp)
MEDIUM: Oil or acrylic
ACCESS: Completed oil or acrylic painting or a photo/print/photocopy of a finished 8.5″ X 11″ painting
DEADLINE: All entries must be received by February 25, 2022. The winner will be announced in March 2022.
POSTAGE COSTS: All paintings shipped must be accompanied by a $35.00 fee to cover the cost of returning artworks. If no check is included, you will need to come to the administration office to pick up your artwork. Checks must be made payable to the DLNR. Otherwise, a photo, printout or photocopy of an original painting can be sent free of charge (see application form).
PAYMENTS: The winner will receive a maximum reward of $1,000.
Funds from Hawaii Wildlife Conservation stamp sales go to the state’s Wildlife Revolving Fund to support wildlife populations and habitats and manage hunting.
Last year, the revenues from both stamps were used to cover some of the cost of maintaining hunting units and to add hunting opportunities for game birds and game mammals where possible. Proceeds from the sale of conservation stamps will also fund the annual lease of the Lānaʻi Cooperative Game Management Area and several other yacht leases.
