A recent survey found that the message describes the feelings of half of the Supreme Court voters “very well.”
sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and dozens of other progressive leaders, candidates, and groups, are hammering away at a common poll-tested refrain against the Supreme Court, arguing that it increasingly faces a “crisis of legitimacy” as judges’ decisions extend the right to abortion, the EPA’s ability to fight climate change, and extend gun rights†
“Our planet is on fire, and this extremist Supreme Court has destroyed the federal government’s ability to fight back,” tweeted Warrena Democrat from Massachusetts, after Thursday’s blow to… regulation of greenhouse gas emissions. “This radical Supreme Court is increasingly facing a crisis of legitimacy and we cannot let them have the last word.”
After Court Overturned Historic Abortion Law Case, Roe v. Wade, New York Democrat Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that two judges “are very credibly charged with sexual assault,” a clear reference to assault charges against Brett Kavanaugh and allegations of harassment against Clarence Thomas, “and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.”
She beat Thomas’ wife Ginni for… Participate in former President Donald Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally on January 6 and before Thomas side with Trump in his effort to preserve some presidential documents from the House Committee investigating the Capitol riots. “This is a legitimacy crisis and President Biden needs to address that,” said Ocasio-Cortez on Meet the Press.
Progressives have sought an expansion of the conservative-dominated Court, along with reforms in ethics and anti-corruption. They say the Court is inexplicable because its members were not elected, and that five justices were nominated by Republican presidents who lost the popular vote. They say a seat was “stolen” because Senate Republicans denied a hearing for Obama candidate Merrick Garland, now US Attorney General.
Along with Warren, other Senate Democrats pushing the illegality message include: Chris van Hollen† Brian Schatz† Sheldon Whitehouse† Alex Padilla and Ed Markey† Members of the house, along with Ocasio-Cortez, include: Hakeem Jeffries† Jamie Raskin† Jerry Nadler† Pramila Jayapal† Katie Porter, Ilhan Omari† Cor Bos, Andy Levin, Rashida Tlaiboand Bonnie Watson Coleman†
“Its legitimacy is gone, the Court should take up residence with the RNC, which sets its agenda,” Maryland Representative Jamie Raskin tweeted.
The message is encouraged by the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and other left-wing groups who say it ranks well nationally and in battlefield states. A June survey by Hart Research for the progressive group Demand Justice in conjunction with PCCC found that the mounting “crisis of legitimacy” message affects the feelings of 51% of voters in all states and 49% of voters on the battlefield “very well.” describes.
The results correspond to a June opinion pollthey note, showing that only 25% of Americans trust the Court, up from 36% in 2021.
“We believe that any criticism of individual court rulings should also provoke this politicized Court itself, and we wanted to ask you to reinforce this message in the coming days,” PCCC co-founder Adam Green wrote in a June 29 message to lawmakers, shared with Insider.
