Bernie Eccleston ‘surprised’ Hamilton didn’t ‘wave away’ Nelson Piquet’s racist comment
Follow live F1 cover if the British Grand Prix weekend starts with free practices one and two om silverstone† Last time in Canada, Max Verstappen claimed his sixth win of the season in Montreal, holding off a late attack from Ferrari‘s Carlos Sainz. The reigning world champion’s lead at the top of the championship standings is now 46 points away from teammate Sergio Perez†
Lewis Hamilton finished third – only his second podium of the season – while fellow British teammate George Russell came home fourth. Both the Silver Arrows and Ferrari – with Charles Leclerc after having had a month to forget – will aim to be on the podium again this weekend.
Hamilton won last season’s race, after crashing with Verstappen at a memorable moment on the opening lap at Copse Corner – and an incident that has come back to the public eye Nelson Piquet’s racist language to describe Hamilton when we talk about the crash.

Despite Hamilton’s slipstream advantage, Russell can’t improve his time…
Sainz is first on the scoreboard, but perhaps a cause for optimism for Mercedes? Hamilton is second after that session, with Norris third – the pair are less than two tenths away from the Ferrari pace-setter.
Not a bad hour for the British!

George Russell is complaining about a lack of grip on the track, in response to his engineer saying he can push hard – he is currently in eighth.
One point to note is that the gap between the top-9 cars is currently no more than a second, with Leclerc in fifth just four-tenths behind his Ferrari team-mate Sainz, still leading the pack into the closing stages.
