A 20-year-old woman was fatally shot in the head Wednesday evening while walking through New York City’s Upper East Side neighborhood, police said.
The woman was pushing a stroller when she was attacked, said a spokesman for Mayor Eric Adams’s office. A man approached her from behind, shot her once in the head and then ran away, authorities said CBS New York†
She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead, according to multiple reports.

Total crime in New York has skyrocketed in recent months, rising 27.8 percent in May 2022 compared to the same month last year, fueled largely by large-scale thefts, burglaries and robberies, according to data released earlier this month by the New York Police Department. York have been released. †
The rise in crime has put pressure on Adams, a former police officer who successfully became mayor on a platform of crackdown on lawlessness. He recently appointed a czar for gun violence; released a 15 page”Blueprint to End Gun Violence† and set up solo patrols for cops in the subway, where crime is increasing at a faster rate.
At the same time, Adams has tried to blame prosecutors and judges for allegedly treating the crime leniently.
“No one takes criminal law more seriously,” he said angrily at a press conference along with law enforcement officers earlier this month. “They no longer take these bad guys seriously. They believe our criminal justice system is a laughing stock of our entire country.”
“We have to take this seriously because innocent people are dying,” he added.
However, the number of murders and shootings has gradually decreased. The number of gun violence incidents in the city fell by 31.4 percent last month compared to May 2021, departmental data shows.
Those numbers have been taken up by Adams’s office, which hopes to change the trajectory of a city that recorded 1,562 shootings in 2021 — the highest number in 15 years. In 2020, there were 1,531 incidents, more than double the previous year’s figure.
There have been 197 murders in New York City so far this year. Four hundred and eighty-eight were registered throughout 2021, and the city is on track to end 2022 with an 11 percent reduction in homicides, according to the report. LX News†
“We have used all the resources we have to reduce gun violence in the city,” Police Commissioner Keechant L. Sewell said in a June 3 statement. “We’ve seen seven consecutive weeks of shootings come down – and that’s no coincidence.”
The unidentified suspect in Wednesday’s shooting, described as a man in black clothing and a hooded sweatshirt, was still on the run as Mayor Adams made his way to the East 95th Street and Lexington Avenue location.
The Upper East Side is one of the wealthiest and safest neighborhoods in New York. Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s official residence, is less than a mile from the crime scene.
