Rep. Wyoming’s Liz Cheney mused about the day when she and her Democratic colleagues could disagree again, a reference to her outspoken and often lonely stance as one of the few Republicans to publicly admonish former President Donald Trump and on the committee that riots of January 6 in the Capitol.
“One of my Democratic colleagues recently told me he was looking forward to the day when he and I could disagree again,” Cheney said during her address at the Reagan Library in California’s Simi Valley on Wednesday. “Believe me, I share that feeling.”
Just a day after the Jan 6 Committee Hearing Damning Testimony From Cassidy Hutchinsona former White House aide, Cheney took the opportunity to deliver searing remarks against Trumpcalled him a “domestic threat”, and on the current state of American politics.
“My fellow Americans, we are on the brink of an abyss and we need to back off,” she said.
Cheney, who has represented Wyoming since 2017, is one of the few Republicans to come out against Trump and have since felt the wrath of her own party for doing so.
In May, House Republicans expel Cheney from her role as conference chair for dismissing Trump’s false election claims and tying the former president to the January 6 riots. She was one of ten Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for inciting violence at the Capitol.
Now she is one of two Republicans on the select nine-seat committee investigating the January 6 riots and serves as vice chair.
In her speech, the Wyoming representative said that if she and Democrats disagree again, that means the course of national politics has corrected itself.
“Because if we can once again disagree on content and policy, it means that our politics have rectified themselves, that we have made a decision to reject anti-democratic forces, reject toxicity, some of the worst forms of racism, bigotry and rejecting the anti-Semitism that characterizes far too much of our current politics,” she said.
