Hawks interested in Deandre Ayton, but didn’t want to pay the maximum

The Hawks can still chase Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton in free agency. Sources tell The Athletic that the Hawks’ interest in the 23-year-old would be contingent on bringing him in on less than a maximum contract. That may not be an option as the Pistons, who have the maximum space for maximum contract, are expected to be aggressive in their pursuit of Ayton free-choice.

With Zach Collins’ contract secured today, the Spurs’ maximum capacity potential is now $34.4 million.
That’s still enough to send a max bid to a free agent with 0-6 years of experience (Ayton as an example).
Not enough for players with 7 years or more experience (e.g. LaVine) – 5:16 p.m.

DET could of course still chase Ayton given their cap space, but I get the feeling the draft went so well in their favor (they didn’t expect an ivey at 5) that they could play with the youngsters and seek veteran help in free agency. Troy has often said not to skip any steps. † 22:39

I wouldn’t quite understand trading the lottery for Duren and then paying Ayton, but this is also the front office that added two off-season four million centers so idk – 21:34

A reminder for your expectations tonight: It’s called a sign-and-trade, not a trade-and-sign. Ayton can’t sign or talk to teams until he’s free. The Bucks ran into trouble for Bogdan Bogdanovic 4 days before 2020 free agency. Didn’t get him and lost a second round pick – 11:52 am
